Two years ago, if a friend asked where to eat in Boerne, there was really one answer: somewhere on Main Street. You picked a spot, you parked once, and you walked to it. That answer isn't wrong exactly, but it's no longer complete, and treating it as complete means missing what's actually changed about a Tuesday night here.
The town's food geography has split into three distinct corridors over the past year, and each one now answers a different question. The Hill Country Mile and South Main handle the slow mornings and the porch dinners. Herff Road is where new reservation-worthy options are planned. The I-10 corridor around Boerne Town Center is absorbing the drive-thru convenience meals. Knowing which corridor to check before you decide where to eat has become a small but real piece of local knowledge, and the corridor getting the most attention right now is also the one where two planned restaurants have yet to open.
The Corridor Split, By Occasion
Here's the practical version, broken down by what you're actually trying to do that night.
| Corridor | Good for | What's open right now |
|---|---|---|
| Hill Country Mile / South Main | Butcher-counter cooking, a slower morning, a porch dinner | Mainz Meat Market's dry-aged case at 101 S. Main St, open since a soft launch in August 2026; The Kendall Restaurant at 128 W. Blanco Road, open since December 18, 2025 |
| Herff Road | Reservation dining, a mix of price points within walking distance | Hamby's, Las Guitarras, and The Dodging Duck Brewhaus & Restaurant are already there; 12 Herff Steakhouse and Meet Me Outside are still not open |
| I-10 / Boerne Town Center | Weeknight convenience, consistent chain options | Chicken Salad Chick, open since a June 3, 2026 grand opening; Chipotle, Freddy's, Panda Express, and others still leasing up behind it |
If you've been defaulting to Main Street out of habit, the Mainz case is worth the detour on a Saturday morning. If you haven't eaten at 128 W. Blanco since it changed hands, that's the bigger shift. The Kendall Restaurant took over the space Peggy's On the Green had occupied since 2016, and Peggy's closed for good on November 30, 2025. The porch looks the same. The kitchen, led by Director of Culinary Experiences Heather Nanez and General Manager Trevor Bratcher, is not running the same menu.
The Herff Road Project to Watch
The corridor everyone's actually been watching is Herff Road, and the reason is a single project: the Herff & River District at 12 Herff Road, developed by the Woodmont Company. The Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce celebrated the groundbreaking on June 12, 2025, and the plans were genuinely unusual for a town this size. Two restaurants anchor the site, both operated by Hooper Hospitality Concepts, a group founded by Andy Hooper after he worked for celebrity chef Mario Batali. Hooper's other projects include Locale Italian Kitchen and El Luchador off the Las Vegas strip, and The Saint, an Italian steakhouse he opened in Dallas in 2023.
The upscale half is 12 Herff Steakhouse, being built inside a renovated farmhouse. The casual half is Meet Me Outside, described by the developer as approachable American fare. Both are under the direction of Culinary Director Jacob Williamson, who began his career under Jean-Georges Vongerichten before working for Wolfgang Puck. Williamson has told local press the steakhouse menu will change monthly, built around handmade pasta, Texas Wagyu, Texas redfish, and diver scallops, with a shareable list that includes wild mushroom arancini in truffle sauce.
"The menu is going to be super locally sourced."
Williamson said this during construction, as reported by Whatnow. It's a level of chef-driven programming this stretch of Herff Road hasn't had before, sitting a short walk from Hamby's, Las Guitarras, and The Dodging Duck Brewhaus.
Here's the part worth knowing if you've been waiting to try it: the original target for completion was summer 2026. As of this month, the most recent independent check-in on the project could still only confirm the June 2025 groundbreaking. No storefront opening date had surfaced to replace that original timeline. None of that means the project has stalled for good. Restaurant construction inside a converted farmhouse runs on its own clock, and permitting timelines shift. It does mean that if you've been telling out-of-town guests to save room for 12 Herff, it's worth checking before you build an evening around it.
What's Actually Working Right Now
If you want dinner tonight instead of a project to watch, here's what's real and open across all three corridors as of this month:
- Mainz Meat Market, 101 S. Main St, for a Saturday butcher run and a wet-aged ribeye
- The Kendall Restaurant, 128 W. Blanco Road, for the porch cocktail that used to be Peggy's
- Hamby's, Las Guitarras, and The Dodging Duck Brewhaus & Restaurant, all already established on Herff Road
- Chicken Salad Chick, off I-10, open since June 2026 with a drive-thru for weekday lunches
The I-10 corridor is the one most residents drive past without registering how much has filled in. Chicken Salad Chick's grand opening drew a crowd for the promise of free chicken salad for a year to the first 100 guests in line, and it's the leading edge of a Boerne Town Center pipeline that still has Chipotle, Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, and Panda Express signed but not yet serving. That corridor is built for consistency, not surprise, and it's doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Why the Split Matters If You Already Live Here
None of this changes what Boerne is. It changes the logistics of an average week. A slow Sunday morning still means the Mile. A weeknight dinner that doesn't require a reservation still means checking Herff Road's existing spots rather than the ones still under construction. A quick lunch between errands still means I-10. The corridors aren't competing with each other so much as splitting up the jobs a single Main Street used to handle alone, and the town is large enough now to support all three running at once.
The one thing worth carrying forward from all of this is a small habit: before you plan an evening around a specific new name on Herff Road, check whether it's actually open yet.
If you're thinking about what a shifting local food scene means for property values or timing a move in or around Boerne, that's a longer conversation, and it's one Claudia Wheeler is glad to have. Let's Connect.
